Blog #6 The Finale

The past couple of weeks I have explored several technologies. Pecha Kucha (Japanese for chatter) 20x20 is a simple presentation format where you display 20 images one at a time, each for 20 seconds. The images advance automatically and you narrate "Live" to the images.  I used this technology with some pictures I had taken on vacation in Mexico at Chichen Itza.  The pictures were added to Microsoft Powerpoint and then placed on a 10 second interval.  If I was actually doing a Pecha Kucha and narrating I would change it to 20 second interval. Pech Kucha is very easy to use if you already know how to use powerpoint. The challenge would be speaking for only 20 seconds on each slide. I added a little Mariachi music to this to make it a little less boring. I think if I were presenting I would use a little background music on some slides.

Glogster as with most Web 2.0 teaching tools, is relatively simple to set up once you acquire a Glogster account. Getting started is safe, private, and user-friendly. You can sign up at the Glogster Edu website. After completing the registration steps, you will receive an email with your nickname, password and login link. I used this technology for my final presentation.  I enjoyed using this site and found it easy to use until I previewed my attached videos.  The videos would not show after I attached them and the screen would be black with the words restricted or out of area on it.  After numerous attempts of unattaching and attaching numerous videos, I finally referred to a Youtube video which explained how I could attach videos using a chain link symbol and not the traditional upload icon. I found this technology a challenge at first only because of the difficulty I encountered to view attached videos. The wall menu is easy to follow to set up your glog. It offered many fun animations and attachments to add to your presentation. Glogster can be used in educational settings as an alternative to traditional poster presentations.

Animoto is a cloud-based video creation service that produces videos from photos, video clips, and music into video slideshows.  You may access this site by signing up at Animoto.com.  This site offers a free 15 second video which you create using your photos or videos.  Animoto has themed templates with music or you may create your own format.   creating a video is easy and you can create a video within minutes.  Attached are photos from J.C. Jewels, a  girls ministry I mentor. I found this site to be intuitive and user friendly. You don't need to create a powerpoint and the end product is much more visually satisfying. Upgrading your status allows you to have more access to various features as well as acquiring more video time.

Computer technologies have opened the door to many new teaching approaches for nurse educators. Teaching with technology is a learned skill, and it involves more knowledge and skill than just knowing how to use a computer. This course has revealed numerous types of instructional technology, which I have not previously been exposed to. Hence, programs are needed to enable teaching faculty to incorporate technology into their repertoire of teaching strategies. I think the use of technology in nursing education will significantly change teaching strategies and will continue to challenge nurse educators in the years to come.

LMS and Simulation Blog#5

These past few weeks the focus has been on Learning Managment Systems (LMS) and Simulation tools.   A Learning Management System (LMS) allows learners to authenticate themselves, register, complete and assess course material.  The I.U. Healthcare System has made substantial efforts in terms of time and money to purchase, maintain and provide the technical and pedagogical support needed to run eLMS. Facilitating flexibility in education with the use of mobile devices may enhance the learning experience and increase staff  knowledge base.

Simulation is another technology I was introduced to this week. Simulation is the imitation or representation of one act or system by another.
Healthcare simulations can be said to have four main purposes – education, assessment, research, and health system integration in facilitating patient safety.  My experience with simulation prior to this lesson was in CPR/BLS certification. The literature on simulation describe the various levels of simulation. The mannequins we used in CPR would be considered low strategy. Low fidelity simulations use strategies such as basic written case studies, role playing e.g. simulated administration. Medium fidelity simulation involves the use of more realism but without automatic cues such as the rise of the chest to simulate breathing. High fidelity simulation provides the most realistic experience, primarily using computer-based manikins, and may use cadavers or animal tissue.

Attached is a video from the Loma Linda University - Medical Simulation Center.  This center has simulation rooms with adjoining observation/debriefing rooms.  From these rooms instructors and peers are able to view in ongoing simulation through one-way glass or watch a live video feed on the monitors.  After the simulation is complete the students are able to watch their simulation as they debrief their completed scenario.

Glogster is a social network that allows users to create free interactive posters, or Glogs. A "Glog", short for "graphics blog", is an interactive multimedia image. It looks like a poster, but readers can interact with the content.  A Glog is created using a very easy to understand, drag and drop interface that is relevant, enjoyable, and scalable for students of all ages and learning styles. A Glog is an interactive visual platform in which users create a “poster or web page” containing multimedia elements including: text, audio, video, images, graphics, drawings, and data.

This class has been very helpful in revealing new and interesting ways to use technology. The different Web 2.0 tools  we have used like Wiki and presentation tools like Prezi,  Camtasia, Screencast, Animoto as well as the blogs may be used in creating new and refreshing LMS's  instead of the standard powerpoints which we presently see. Integrating technology into education means more than teaching basic skills. Effective technology integration must happen across the curriculum to enhance the learning process.

Digital Story Telling - Blog #4

The past few weeks have been stimulating and ambitious for me. In my quest to learn about digital technology I have created a Camtasia Video to show my journey. First I created a powerpoint with music and then converted the powerpoint to video using Camtasia.  With the help of YouTube this process was not difficult.  The only problems I encountered were as follows: the original background music would not transfer, convert or download from my powerpoint.  I could not download music from iTunes nor my personal collection of music. My only option for music was to use the pre-recorded downloads on Camtasia. The powerpoint also had videos embedded in it with rational for use, but these vidwhich would not be visible in the Camtasia video.  These videos are attached below.

The URL is http://www.screencast.com/t/mA0o7I6yOoy for the Camtasia.

Blog# 3

The proliferation of technology is changing education in America.  Changes are occurring in the way students communicate by using social media to the way teachers are teaching.   In the past couple of  weeks I continue to grow in learning about new technology and the various ways this technology is being used.
As part of my growing experience last week I used Prezi, a newer form of a "powerpoint" for the first time.  At first I was extremely intimidated.  A peer in this class found a YouTube video which clearly explained how to use Prezi.  That was my saving grace.  By the end of Prezi project I was actually smiling and realized I enjoyed it.  There were quite a lot of bumps throughout and with more usage I'm sure my presentations will improve, but I was extremely proud of myself at its completion. Below is a YouTube on Prezi.

Vimeo is a U.S. based video sharing website where you can upload, share and view videos.  This site interest me because I didn't known there was another form of YouTube out there. Vimeo has been streaming video since late 2004 and according to it's website it actually launched four months before YouTube.  I opened a VIMEO account and while viewing some videos I noted that it has no commercials and the site appears cleaner than YouTube.

With VIMEO you can upload videos, share videos with family and friends, explore other videos and sharpen your video making skill  on VIMEO Video school.
The attached  link thru VIMEO shows the journey of technology in education.

Flipping a classroom is an interesting concept which may encompass the use of VIMEO.
According to the Teaching and Educational Development Institute of the University of Queensland Australia, the purpose of flipping the classroom is to shift from passive to active learning to focus on the higher order thinking skills such as analysis, synthesis and thinking.  In a typical flipped classroom students listen to prerecorded video lectures before class and perform learning activities while in class.  Attached is a PBS video showing what a flipped classroom looks like.

Flipped Classroom delivers instruction online outside the classroom while students watch lectures at home at their own pace. This concept is great for students who require hearing the content more than once. They may "rewind" the lessons and review it as many times as necessary until they understand the concept. When students meet in class they are usually given additional assessments and exercises on the lessons they viewed.  Students also are more engaged with the flipped classroom method and have more questions.

These past couple of weeks has kept me very busy exploring numerous technologies.  I have learned that instructional technology plays a key role in teaching.  I am becoming a little more at ease with the use of technology and I have grown in my awareness of the advantages of using technology.

Blog #1

Hi Everyone;

It is evident that technology is making an impact on education.  According to 21st Century Classroom the top three reasons for teachers to use technology in the classroom are: adapting to diverse learning styles, boost student motivation and to enhance the material being taught.  As the world of online education continues to evolve Education Week writer Michelle Davis states that schools are incorporating digital curricula and virtual teachers into the classrooms in ways that have surprised the advocates of online education.  In the past few weeks I have learned that it is up to the educator to find the best ways to integrate technology into the classroom.  The Online Journal of Issues In Nursing  article titled Simulation Techniques to Bridge the Gap Between Novice and Competent Healthcare Professionals states that simulation may be used to enhance confidence and clinical skills as well as a method used to evaluate students skill competency. Using the simulation technique while instructing new nurses on how to prep patients would help in reducing the incidences of surgical site infections.  As illustrated in the diagram below, prepping from the incision site outward helps to decrease infection and the student would be trained in an inviting, user friendly environment without feeling intimidated by the surgical staff.

Prezi is a tool I which I didn't know existed until this course. The boredom of your typical power-points will no longer exist if everyone was aware of Prezi.  It is a great tool to use because it acts as a zoomable camera.    With Prezi you can showcase your work or ideas by creating your work on a white board.  Even though I haven't tried this yet I fully intend to do so.  This will not only keep students engaged but you can create a story with your ideas and images.

Prezi  lets you zoom in to emphasize a detail or zoom out to see the big picture.  The zooming effect will be helpful to the students in remembering the particulars in the presentation.

Prezi would be an extremely effective tool when describing how valves are replaced or repaired. The zooming in effect would be beneficial at the dissection of the leaflets.  It is unimaginable to describe this to students or inexperienced OR nurses.

Animoto is a site which lets you make a video by consolidating your pictures and videos.   This site would be of great use especially when we have patients who bring their cameras into the OR and want pictures taken.  This sometimes happens on transplants. A cystic fibrosis patient receiving lungs would request pictures of his old damaged lungs and pictures of his new lungs coming out of the cooler and being placed in his body.
I liked this site and see myself using it for images and videos of our vacations.  I especially like the idea of adding music like steel drums when we were in Jamaica, or Regae music.

Introduction

                                                                  Introduction
My name is Sandra Morgan.  I attended Marian University, Indianapolis, IN and graduated with an ASN in 2002.  I received my BSN from Chamberlain and I currently work as a nurse at Methodist Hospital. I work in Core V specializing in Cardiovascular and Peripheral Vascular Surgeries.  I am also a surgical heart and lungs transplant coordinator.  This position can be very stressful, demanding and rewarding all at the same time.  I have recently accepted a position as the educator for cardiovascular surgery.  I am chair of the Healthy Work Environment and am involved on several committees at Methodist including Nurse Retention and Cultural Diversity to name a few.

I am married to a wonderful Bermudian man named Wayman.  We have been married for 12 years.  Since his origin is Bermuda and he still has the majority of his family still living there, we try to visit Bermuda yearly.  My family is from Barbados which we have also gone to several times.  We have a very spoiled Pomeranian dog named Skittles who we call the million dollar dog sine we paid almost four thousand dollars to have her broken leg fixed, which my husband had accidentally broke while practicing his golf swing.

Keeping the end in mind, with my recent acceptance as a surgical nurse educator I feel I am on the right path to find fulfillment in educating.  I enjoy teaching new nurses and understand the responsibility that comes along with this position.  Setting objectives is important and one of my current objectives is ensuring that nurses understand the principles of asepsis technique in the operating room.  Another objective is for each nurse to be aware of their surgical conscience, to respect and act on it in order to preserve the lives of our patients.
