LMS and Simulation Blog#5

These past few weeks the focus has been on Learning Managment Systems (LMS) and Simulation tools.   A Learning Management System (LMS) allows learners to authenticate themselves, register, complete and assess course material.  The I.U. Healthcare System has made substantial efforts in terms of time and money to purchase, maintain and provide the technical and pedagogical support needed to run eLMS. Facilitating flexibility in education with the use of mobile devices may enhance the learning experience and increase staff  knowledge base.

Simulation is another technology I was introduced to this week. Simulation is the imitation or representation of one act or system by another.
 Healthcare simulations can be said to have four main purposes – education, assessment, research, and health system integration in facilitating patient safety.  My experience with simulation prior to this lesson was in CPR/BLS certification. The literature on simulation describe the various levels of simulation. The mannequins we used in CPR would be considered low strategy. Low fidelity simulations use strategies such as basic written case studies, role playing e.g. simulated administration. Medium fidelity simulation involves the use of more realism but without automatic cues such as the rise of the chest to simulate breathing. High fidelity simulation provides the most realistic experience, primarily using computer-based manikins, and may use cadavers or animal tissue.

Attached is a video from the Loma Linda University - Medical Simulation Center.  This center has simulation rooms with adjoining observation/debriefing rooms.  From these rooms instructors and peers are able to view in ongoing simulation through one-way glass or watch a live video feed on the monitors.  After the simulation is complete the students are able to watch their simulation as they debrief their completed scenario.

It looks like a poster, but readers can interact with the content.  A Glog is created using a very easy to understand, drag and drop interface that is relevant, enjoyable, and scalable for students of all ages and learning styles. A Glog is an interactive visual platform in which users create a “poster or web page” containing multimedia elements including: text, audio, video, images, graphics, drawings, and data.

This class has been very helpful in revealing new and interesting ways to use technology. The different Web 2.0 tools  we have used like Wiki and presentation tools like Prezi,  Camtasia, Screencast, Animoto as well as the blogs may be used in creating new and refreshing LMS's  instead of the standard powerpoints which we presently see. Integrating technology into education means more than teaching basic skills. Effective technology integration must happen across the curriculum to enhance the learning process.

Digital Story Telling - Blog #4

The past few weeks have been stimulating and ambitious for me. In my quest to learn about digital technology I have created a Camtasia Video to show my journey. First I created a powerpoint with music and then converted the powerpoint to video using Camtasia.  With the help of YouTube this process was not difficult.  The only problems I encountered were as follows: the original background music would not transfer, convert or download from my powerpoint.  I could not download music from iTunes nor my personal collection of music. My only option for music was to use the pre-recorded downloads on Camtasia. The powerpoint also had videos embedded in it with rational for use, but these vidwhich would not be visible in the Camtasia video.  These videos are attached below.
